- Description
- Franki Raffles was a feminist social documentary photographer. She was based in Scotland but also travelled widely, photographing women at work and in their everyday lives. Her death in 1994 at the age of 39 came just as her work and reputation was coming to wide public attention.
The Franki Raffles Photography Collection holds photographic materials and documents related to Raffles's career as a photographer, ranging from materials for learning photography and images produced from her early attempts to take and print photographs, to exhibition mock-ups for her last and unfinished project. The collection contains over 40,000 photographs that exist in a variety of physical manifestations. The work of Raffles in the collection is organised in accordance with the photographic projects and journeys she undertook.
In collaboration with Edinburgh Napier University and with the full support of Franki Raffles’s family, the University aims to compile a systematic catalogue of her work and to organise an exhibition of selected photographs which will begin the process of assessing her career, celebrate her contribution to photography in Scotland and contribute to the wider understanding of social documentary and feminist photography.
