Richard Norville Watson (Dick) Smith (1916-1999) was a lecturer and senior lecturer in Logic at University of St Andrews, 1949-1977. He collected and took photographs of ships and shipping, particularly the Clyde steamers of the 19th and 20th centuries. Over half the collection relates to steamers on the River Clyde. The remainder are mostly coastal and passenger ships from other British areas, though there are a few ocean and foreign ones, as well as a small number of topographical postcards.
