- Christy O'Connor Jr approaching the 18th green on the final day of the 1989 Ryder Cup with world number one, Fred Couples following thoughtfully behind
- Description
- Christy O'Connor Jr was playing in the seventh match of the 1989 Ryder Cup singles and as he stood on the tee of the 18th, the Europeans required just two points to retain the cup. His opponent, Fred Couples, hit a drive 350 yards down the middle and O'Connor was a long way behind him when captain Jacklin came to O'Connor on the fairway and said: "One more swing for Ireland. You get anywhere on the green and you're going to put huge pressure on him." O'Connor hit a two-iron to four feet and the putt was sunk to win the match. In the next match Canizares beat Ken Green 1up and the cup was retained.
