Description

Postcard reproduction of the First General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland signing the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission., 18th May 1843. This painting is internationally important as being the fist work of art painted with the help of a camera. The painting is commemorative, the artist having taken 457 people associated with the Assembly from a total of 1500. The painting measures 12'x4'x8'. The artist spent 23 years in completing the canvas, and it has hung in the Free Presbitery Hall, The Mound, since 1866.
