Painting of a scene in a musicians' gallery.

A group of singers and musicians in two pews clustered round a man with his hand raised and the other on an open book. The man (choirmaster?) has a dark suit and a white cravat, another man leans over the pew to talk to him (or listen to the note?). The rest of the people are in distinct groups. The women singers are on the left wearing bonnets and white shawls or capes over their dresses. Men singers, back left, wearing suits are grouped round a clarinettist. Two boy singers on right in suits with broad collared shirts. A cellist and bassoon player are behind the boys, with a young couple in the background. Several of the men have white cravats wound high on their necks.
