Walker Trust - Byzantine Excavation Papers, Istanbul photography
Photographic material relating to the Walker Trust excavations of the Great Palace of the Byzantine Emperors in Istanbul carried out under J H Baxter, Professor of Ecclesiastical History, the University of St Andrews, in the period 1935 - 1938. These excavations unearthed the Great Palace Mosaic. From 1951 to 1954 the excavations were re-initiated and brought to a conclusion under David Talbot Rice, Watson Gordon Professor of Fine Art, the University of Edinburgh. These later excavations included minor works at the site of the House of Justinian in 1953. SCOPE AND CONTENT: 10 binders of quarter plate negatives, 1935 -1939. These binders contain a negative run of the official image series for these excavations showing the dig site, mosaic detail and other finds.
